Incorporated as the Village of Bobcaygeon in 1876, and known as the “Hub of the Kawarthas”: Bobcaygeon has become a tourist and retirement destination for those looking to escape the GTA. Its recorded name bob-ca-je-wan-unk comes either from the Mississauga Ojibwa word baabaagwaajiwanaang ”at the very shallow currents”, giishkaabikojiwanaang ”at the cliffed cascades” or obaabikojiwanaang ”at currented rocky narrows”, or from the French beau bocage ”beautiful hedged farmland”. Situated on three lovely islands Bobcaygeon is one of the most popular destinations for tourists and cottagers in the Kawartha Lakes. The very first lock constructed (Lock 32) on the Trent Severn Waterway and the National Historic Parkland is the centre of the village and connecting boaters with Sturgeon Lake and Pigeon Lake.

The breathtaking scenery and rich history that is the City of Kawartha Lakes has made it one of Ontario’s most desired retirement destinations. Sandy beaches, winding roads, golf courses and stunning sunsets along the Trent Lakes make for a laid back retirement lifestyle that you can enjoy for years to come. With Brad Nelson and Kelli Lovell as your real estate buyers agents, you can purchase the retirement home of your dreams on one of the many lakes or communities that make up the Kawartha Lakes. Don’t just visit The Kawartha Lakes, make it your home!

Bobcaygeon rests on three islands set in-between Sturgeon and Pigeon Lakes, and is connected by seven bridges. The Kawartha Lakes and the Trent Severn Waterway are a the focal point to many of the recreational activities in Bobcaygeon, everything from sailing, fishing, swimming and canoeing in the lakes to cruising the Trent Severn Waterway. Bobcaygeon is home of the oldest operating lock built in 1835. With a rich history in farming and timber, Bobcaygeon Settlers Village offers visitors the opportunity to see many pioneer buildings and homes and offers many community events including the Festival of Trees and the Halloween activities in addition to the many ongoing social and craft events. The Bobcaygeon Fair, a century old event presents animal competitions, a midway, contests, a parade and a demolition derby.

Bobcaygeon offers many attractions and activities for residents and visitors alike; hiking, fishing, skating, ice hockey, curling, snowmobiling, boating, historic walks, skateboard park, bingo nights a lawn bowling club, tennis courts, bowling alley, basketball courts, baseball diamonds and beaches are few of the activities that keep many locals entertained.

Bobcaygeon also holds many charming events for the locals and surrounding tourists. One of Ontario’s oldest and most popular Fall Fair goes far back as 1858. This little town is also known for hosting Canada’s premier “Open Fiddle and Step Dance Contest“. Bobcaygeon has also been the host for many years to the Annual Canada/US Walleye Fishing Tournament. Up to 150 teams from all over North America set out to Sturgeon and Pigeon Lakes to catch “the big one” on the last weekend in May.

True to the words of the modern ballad, it was in Bobcaygeon where I saw the constellations reveal themselves one star at a time.
